September 2010 - Ezy Reading: |
This month we thought to present a different edition of Ezy Reading to normal and instead offer up a photo-essay of street art taken from a recent trip to Australia and, in particular, to Sydney and Melbourne.
While no means an exhaustive collection of photographs from both cities -that would require more space than available here and, indeed, there exist far more comprehensive and highly recommended collections of such art in books like the excellent Uncomissioned Art: An A-Z of Australian Grafitti by Christine Dew- we hope it might provide an insight into what is a thriving art scene. Over the last twenty years street art in Australia has moved well beyond perceptions of it as mere 'vandalism', and, most especially in Melbourne, it is well supported by the community in much of the city (though we will have to overlook a most unfortunate incident involving the Banksy artwork in Melbourne's hosier lane that was inadvertently painted over earlier this year).
