There And Back:
The Australian Drought
Tom Chesson

The drought in Australia is worsening with some regions of Queensland now approaching their seventh year of drought, having experienced only a handful of good years since the Millennium Drought. Around home black-rock wallabies have been coming into new territory in search of food. I've been observing this family of wallabies who've moved onto a farm in the Australian Capital Territory for a while now.

The series of shots showing a big old male wallaby falling over are a poignant reminder that even our native animals whose DNA has been shaped by Australia's extremes are being tested by the current drought. Starvation is a very real threat as feed supplies dwindle even before we hit what is being predicted to be a hot dry Spring, followed by a scorching summer. Bring on the rain.

Tom grew up on a farm in far western NSW and knew at a young age his shooting was best done with a camera. With a journalism, media adviser, CEO and now  with his new job working on a plan to release the carp herpes virus into Australia's waterways, photography is part of Tom's everyday work. Outside Australia's capital cities is where Tom does most of his shooting and wandering around regional and rural Australia is home to his 'happy place'. Tom usually has a camera on him and can be followed via Twitter @tomchesson01
