Smashed Pepper Returns:
A note from Cud co-founder, Oliver Pennington

Much has changed in the digital media landscape since we launched The Cud. A monthly online publication is an antique concept. Most sites publish several times daily to keep readers interested.

When we first considered publishing this online magazine the idea of blogging was new. There was no social media - no Twitter or Facebook. Search engines played a far less important role in distributing content. A lot more of the web was web-like - things were woven together by hyperlink, not by search engines, RSS feeds, tweets, status updates, or social bookmarks. You couldn't "like" stuff. There were no comments (and thankfully no trolls, either). If you had email access or a camera on your mobile phone, you were at the cutting edge. They were simpler times.

The Cud hasn't changed much since then. Early issues were painstakingly hand coded HTML, and aside from new technology to make publication easier, the site is more or less today as it was at the start.

What's kept the site relevant is the persistence and dedication of founder and Editor, Evan Kanarakis, and interesting content submitted by contributors over the years. The Cud has always relied on unpaid contributions from part-time writers, poets and cartoonists. It's a thrill to see something you've thoughtfully written published, and I'm glad The Cud has been able to give that opportunity to lots of different folks from all around the world.

Here's to another 100 issues!
