Movie Ruminations

Juddy

Editor's Note: Alas the impact of COVID-19 has impacted Movie Ruminations. This month we present a more abbreviated column from Juddy than usual, due to cinema closures across the country. We hope to have more of your beloved reviews soon enough!

Fantasy Island
Schlock horror re-working of the 1970s and 1980s TV show, where a middle-aged and broadening Michael Peña replaces the ever debonair, tall and slim Ricardo Montalban.
This never quite gets there, but it has its own charm. If you dig screaming blondes figuring it out and you had a soft spot for ‘da plane’ then this can kill some time for you.

The Call of the Wild
Dear me. I am not sure which is more offensive - the neutering of the "call" and the avoidance of a great deal of the bloodshed, violence and plain nastiness of the Yukon gold rush, and the 1890s generally as depicted by Jack London, or this damnable live-action/CGI-animation hybrid where the dogs are anthropomorphised and frankly look more than a little ridiculous. Apparently they spent $135 million on this - good luck getting that back.
If you are good with suspension-of-disbelief this is affecting and sentimental enough, and I suppose if you haven't read the book lately, or perhaps ever, there is no particular reason to get upset with the sanitising and po-mo touches. Probably best seen with kids.

Juddy keeps busy consuming cultural media while posing as a student at a major Sydney university, thus shirking real work. He hosts pub trivia, and tutors at said university, for beer and book money.
