Looking Back: The Ashes, 2005
A Poem
Andrew Coorey

The sleeping giant never woke

And left not just one saddened bloke

Kasper never found his length

Dizzy seemed to lose his strength

Martyn looked good until he got out

Gilly looked like he had gout

It took five tests to find Matt Hayden

Brett Lee couldn’t bowl a maiden

He bent his back and did his best

But Warney had to do the rest

With Glenn McGrath too often hurt

The bookmakers have got my shirt

Credit though where it is due

The English, they were handy too

And didn’t buckle after Lords

Selectors didn’t draw their swords

But backed their judgement and their men

And sent them after us again

They made the most of any luck

And beat us. Jesus. Golly. Fuck.
